Né à Montréal, Yves Arcand a étudié la photographie et le cinéma à la Toronto Metropolitan University puis a obtenu un bac en Arts visuels (BFA) du Nova Scotia College of Art and Design à Halifax. Il a ensuite complété une maîtrise en Arts visuels (MFA) spécialisée en photographie à l’Université Concordia. Il a enseigné la photographie pendant plus de trente ans aux niveaux collégial et universitaire. Il poursuit maintenant sa carrière artistique.
Son travail traite de la problématique nature/culture et des questions relatives à la représentation photographique du territoire. Il a été plusieurs fois boursier du Conseil des arts du Canada et du Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec. Ses œuvres ont notamment été exposées au Canada, aux États-Unis ainsi qu’en France.

Il poursuit présentement son exploration sur l’utilisation des photogrammes numériques débutée après l’obtention d’une bourse du CALQ dans le cadre du programme de partenariat territorial du Bas-St-Laurent. En 2024, une résidence artistique en Finlande lui a également permis d’approfondir cette recherche.
Born in Montreal, Yves Arcand studied photography and film at Toronto Metropolitan University and then earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax. He then completed a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in photography at Concordia University. He taught photography for over thirty years at both college and university levels. He is now pursuing his artistic career.
His work addresses the nature/culture issue and questions related to the photographic representation of territory. He has received several grants from the Canada Council for the Arts and the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec. His work has been exhibited in Canada, the United States and France. He is currently pursuing his exploration of the use of digital photograms, which he began after receiving a grant from the CALQ as part of the Bas-St-Laurent Territorial Partnership Program. In 2024, an artist residency in Finland also allowed him to further this research.

DÉMARCHE ARTISTIQUE / ARTIST STATEMENT
À l’aide du médium photographique, j’explore la problématique nature/culture dans notre société. Avec différentes stratégies, j’interroge les liens inévitables, qu’ils soient harmonieux ou conflictuels, entre la nature dans ses multiples formes et la présence de l’humain. Mes images de paysages, de détails de paysages ou de natures mortes mettent en évidence et en valeur des sujets parfois dénigrés ou marginalisés, parfois des sujets idéalisés. Mon questionnement sur l’influence humaine dans la fabrication de notre relation avec la nature passe par une réflexion et un regard créatif, différent, voire transformé sur nos œkoumènes. Le concept de beauté de la nature devient alors très relatif.
De plus, par une recherche sur la représentation photographique des territoires, je teste les limites liées à la notion de véracité du document visuel. L’utilisation de différentes méthodes de captations photographiques me permet d’explorer les interprétations possibles des environnements qui nous entourent et devient alors une quête personnelle et un commentaire social.
Ma recherche photographique porte donc à la fois sur notre relation avec la nature, sur l’idée que nous nous en faisons, mais aussi sur notre capacité à la rendre en images.
Using the medium of photography, I explore the nature/culture issue in our society. Using various strategies, I question the inevitable links, whether harmonious or conflicting, between nature in its many forms and the presence of humans. My images of landscapes, landscape details, and still lifes highlight and emphasize subjects that are sometimes denigrated or marginalized, sometimes idealized. My questioning of human influence in shaping our relationship with nature leads me to think creatively, differently and even transformed about our oecumene. The concept of nature’s beauty then becomes very relative.
Furthermore, through research on the photographic representation of territories, I test the limits of the notion of veracity of the visual document. The use of different photographic capture methods allows me to explore possible interpretations of the environments around us and thus becomes a personal quest and a social commentary. My photographic research therefore focuses on our relationship with nature, on the idea we have of it, but also on our ability to render it in images.
